My Personal Research Journey

Hello everyone!

The topic I have chosen for my research simulation is "What effect does learning through play in early childhood have on self-regulation in higher grades."    I chose it because where I teach, we use the Tools of the Mind curriculum which is based on Vygotsy's approach of teaching through play and although there is much negative talk about our curriculum not teaching enough academic material, I find that my students leave very self-regulated and know how to share, play, take turns and really have a love of school.  I wonder if those children still feel and act the same way (less behavioral problems, etc.) when they move up in elementary school.

Creating the research chart this week was a challenge for me, especially figuring out the differences between Qualitative and Quantative research approaches.  I find it a bit confusing and overwhelming, but I was lucky enough to have a friend who just finished his dissertation help explain it to me in the simplest of terms.... apples and oranges!  And, thankfully it makes better sense to me now.

I look forward to reading everyone else's topics!  Good luck to you all!

  1. Janet,

That is interesting that you were trying to understand qualitative and quantitative research because I was exploring the same thing. It made me curious to know the difference. I am finding that being introduced to these new terms can really take some time to understand. It is exciting to finally grasp a few of them, though, and I hope to be able to grasp more as the days proceed.
Your research topic sounds interesting! I look forward to hearing more about it.
    Good luck!

  2. Hello Janet: I am interested in your topic, it is so important for children to reach that self regulation point in order to learn as they go into the public school system. I am with you in trying to understand the processes of each design. Good luck in your search and hope to hear from you and your findings.

  3. The concept of play is important for children to develop as young children. Through play, children learn various concepts and skills that will help them as they become younger adults in high school. Therefore, it is important that self-regulation skills are introduced in the classroom setting so that the children will not have difficulties as they pass on the next grade level. Nevertheless, many skills that are learned as students are younger will reflect in the learning environment as the become older.
