As a teacher in a low-income, urban district in New Jersey, I have seen the huge success that Early Intervention Services have had on my students academic success. These services have been made possible because of the research that has been done on low income families such as in the study by Campbell, F. A. and Ramey, C. T. (1994), Effects of Early Intervention on Intellectual and Academic Achievement: A Follow-up Study of Children from Low-Income Families. Child Development, 65: 684–698. doi: 10.1111/j.1467-8624.1994.tb00777.x.
Without research like this, these programs would not be running and low income families who do not have the means of others wouldn't be as successful in our classrooms as they actually are. This year, for example, I had a three year old who received early intervention services for six months before he came to my class and he went from not speaking at all, to a vocabulary of over 100 words. By the end of the school year, he was almost right where he needed to be and his family and I couldn't be happier to see his progress. That's what research is all about, the success of others!
Janet,
ReplyDeleteI appreciate the research that shows that early intervention is so beneficial to young children. That is one of my main motivator's for getting this master's degree. I am hoping to help young children before it gets too late. Thank you for this reference.

Janet,
ReplyDeleteStories like this are uplifting and certainly reminds us of the importance in our work. I am glad that the programme Early Intervention Service has been an academic success. Thanks for sharing.
Early intervention services is great for children who are in need of the extra supports and services. Just like you, I have experienced someone who has a child who receive early intervention services. The teacher comes to the homes once a week for an hour and work with the child in different developmental and academic areas. This person's child is now in first grade and doing well in his class.
ReplyDeleteJanet,
DeleteI think that it is amazing and so wonderful that the student in your classroom was able to go above the odds and start speaking over a 100 words, and its all because of Early intervention services. Services like this need to continue to stay around because everyone does not have access to specialist, this comes in as something that is truly beneficial to lower income families.
